On this day in 1863, the Granadine Confederation (Confederación Granadina) became the United States of Colombia (Estados Unidos de Colombia). The original 9 states included Antioquia, Bolívar, Boyacá, Cauca, Cundinamarca, Magdalena, Panamá, Santander, and Tolima, and included the territories of Caquetá, San Martin, and Nevada and Motilones. The United States of Colombia were made up of the modern nations of Colombia and Panama, as well as parts of northwestern Brazil, with its capital in Bogotá, Colombia. The dissolution of the Granadine confederation resulted from civil war lasting from 1860 - 1862. On 3 February 1863, Congress approve the name United States of Colombia for the country, and on 8 May the Rionegro Constitution was brought into force, establishing a federal system with a central presidency with a term of 2 years and without the possibility of Immediate re-election. On 12 May 1863, Tomás Cipriano de Mosquera was chosen as the first president. After several years of intermittent civil war, in 1886 the United States of Colombia was abolished and the current Republic of Colombia formed. Panama succeeded in 1903 becoming a sovereign nation. Despite several decades of political violence and low-intensity armed conflict, Colombia has become one of Latin America’s most economical stable nations with favorable long-term growth prospects. Colombia is one of the world most ethnically and linguistically diverse countries in the world with more 70 recognized languages including Spanish, England, 68 local languages and dialects. Colombia is also among the world 17 megadiverse countries and the most densely biodiverse per square kilometer. It’s borders encompasses Amazon rainforest, tropical grasslands, and coastlines along both the Caribbean and Pacific Oceans.
